Does the 86-member petition violate international law?

The article discusses the Lebanese parliamentary members who signed a petition with 86 signatures to renew and expand the mandate of the "UNIFIL" forces operating in southern Lebanon as a means to deter Hezbollah and Israel. It points out that while the petition calls for both objectives, it lacks clear implementation tools or a definitive draft resolution, since modifying UNIFIL's mandate requires a Security Council decision, not just a parliamentary petition. The report clarifies that the Security Council alone holds the authority to determine the end of the peacekeeping mission, and any significant changes would require a vote, likely facing opposition from the United States and Israel—making actual expansion more complicated. Ultimately, the petition is seen more as a form of political pressure than a direct legal step toward changing UNIFIL's operating rules.
