Tunisia Night Protests Over Power Cuts

Tunisia is currently facing a severe electricity outage crisis due to a record-high surge in consumption during an unprecedented heatwave. This has led to widespread strikes and protests across several governorates, including Tozeur and Manouba. Protesters have blocked roads and set tires on fire to demand the return of electricity, especially as full blackouts are recurring in some areas, threatening the lives of patients reliant on medical devices. The Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company announced the implementation of a scheduled and organized power outage system to prevent nationwide blackouts, pointing out that the main cause is increased demand due to air conditioning use. It called on citizens to ration consumption to ease pressure on the grid. The decline in electricity and water supplies has caused economic losses and disrupted medical services, amid worsening conditions stemming from the inability to meet the growing demand.
