Daily tomato intake impacts fatty liver treatment

Daily tomato intake impacts fatty liver treatment

A recent study published in the journal "Nutrients" has shown that consuming tomatoes daily can help reduce liver fat associated with Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASLD). The study involved 79 patients aged between 18 and 65 years. One group consumed 200 grams of fresh tomatoes and 50 grams of tomato sauce daily for six weeks, while the control group followed a diet free of tomatoes. The results indicated that liver fat decreased more significantly in the group that ate tomatoes, with an average reduction of 35 decibels per meter compared to 18 decibels per meter in the other group, with no significant changes in weight or body mass index. This effect is believed to be due to lycopene, a potent antioxidant found in tomatoes that promotes liver health by counteracting oxidative stress associated with cellular damage. Despite these promising findings, the researchers note that the study is limited in scope and duration, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle—including the Mediterranean diet and physical activity—remains the foundation for preventing and managing fatty liver disease.
