How Fuel Prices Are Determined Now

The article addresses the issue of the fuel price hike in Lebanon and the decision by Energy Minister Joe Saade to request the cancellation or suspension of the 300,000 lira tax on gasoline, as a step to reduce the cost for consumers. The focus is on questioning the timing of this decision, the components of fuel pricing and how it is determined, as well as the factors that influence electricity bills and private generator costs—especially amidst the ongoing inadequacy of official electricity supply and citizens’ suffering from rising expenses due to increased hours of private generator operation. The article also points to the complex interplay of oil prices, taxes, and operational costs, emphasizing that solutions are not limited to just removing a tax but also include increasing electricity production, improving the pricing mechanism, and broadly controlling costs.
