Far right wins German state presidency

For the first time since 1945, the state of Saxony-Anhalt in Germany has elected a far-right leader as the head of its regional parliament. This occurred after the far-right party achieved a significant victory in the elections over the conservative parties supported by Chancellor Friedrich Merz. According to the results, 48 deputies voted in favor of the candidate from the Alternative for Germany (AfD), while 29 deputies voted against, and 5 abstained. This was accompanied by protests calling for no cooperation with the party, amid fears of a repeat of Germany's Nazi past. This outcome represents a historic victory for the far right and raises widespread concern over the rise of right-wing and populist movements in Germany.
