Tuvalu urges support for climate aid

Pacific leaders are calling for increased funding from wealthy nations to combat climate change, warning that rising sea levels and extreme weather events threaten the very existence of some countries in the region. Particularly at risk is Tuvalu, which continues to develop plans to relocate its approximately 10,600 residents should the island be submerged, after a heatwave in 2024 destroyed 99.9% of its coral reefs. Developing countries need between $310 billion and $365 billion annually to adapt to climate change, yet the available funding for 2023 has not exceeded $26 billion. Events have been held in Fiji to raise awareness, with limited commitments from Australia and Fiji. Fiji and Tuvalu pledged to increase funding to support infrastructure projects and efforts to keep global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius, as part of preparations for COP31 in Turkey. The focus remains on the urgent need for climate finance to aid the most vulnerable nations.
