Pope Leo Criticizes Death Penalty

Pope Leo XIV, the Vatican Pope, stated today that the death penalty violates the sanctity of life and deprives people of the opportunity for repentance. He expressed his rejection of it, considering it an assault on human dignity. This came after the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced its intention to broadcast a live execution process for the first time in U.S. history, with the military carrying out a firing squad execution of a murderer who killed 13 people in 2009. This plan has sparked domestic and international controversy. The Vatican Pope voiced his opposition to this penalty, believing that justice can be achieved without resorting to the death penalty. Instead, he emphasized that protecting the public interest requires reducing reliance on the death penalty, which he considers an assault on human dignity and integrity. This coincided with objections from lawmakers, religious leaders, and observers to the planned live broadcast of the execution scheduled for December, while the U.S. president has not yet clarified his stance on the broadcast.
