FIFA Council Convenes Amid Pressure

FIFA President Gianni Infantino faced sharp criticism during the FIFA Council meeting in Zurich, for the first time since his failure to implement his plans to attract investors for the World Cup. The meeting covers several routine agenda items, but it also includes a discussion of the "FIFA Forward Project" plan, which has sparked controversy among Europeans who are calling for reforms in FIFA's leadership structure and for a more representative and operationally focused presidential role, while Infantino rejects this. He is facing criticism campaigns from UEFA leaders and Germany over controversial decisions such as awarding the FIFA Fair Play Award to Trump, amid calls for leadership changes before the March 2024 elections. Infantino's strong influence in Asia and Africa continues to hinder change, amidst pressure from opponents to present an alternative candidate before the election date.
