Argentina protests over university funding

Buenos Aires experienced clashes between security forces and protesters during demonstrations organized by thousands of students and professors demanding the implementation by the Javier Milei government of a law to update public university funding. This law was approved by Parliament in August 2025 after being vetoed by the president. The law aims to update professors' salaries in line with inflation rates since December 2023, overhaul scholarships, and fund university operations. However, resources allocated to universities have decreased by 40.5% compared to the first half of 2023, according to a study. The protests follow previous strikes and demonstrations, as the government continues to delay implementing the law despite a court ruling and Supreme Court judgments demanding increased funding and support for universities.
