Beqaa shipment challenges sovereignty

The article discusses a shipment of explosives weighing approximately 780 kilograms, which was on its way from Baalbek to the southern suburbs of Beirut. It raises questions about the Lebanese state's ability to assert its authority in the face of Hezbollah's weapons and whether this operation reflects a decline in state sovereignty or ongoing Iranian influence in Lebanon. Deputy Hassan Fadlallah admitted that the shipment belongs to Hezbollah, highlighting the challenges of controlling weapons activity outside the framework of state laws. It also puts the country to a critical test in holding those responsible accountable and assessing the capacity of legitimate institutions to prevent arms smuggling, especially amid security and diplomatic repercussions. The importance of a thorough investigation to uncover all stages of the transfer process is emphasized, with the assurance that success is not only measured by arrests but also by uncovering those behind the operation and ensuring the law applies equally to everyone.
