Environment Minister urges global emergency fund for Lebanon

Environmental Minister Tamara Al-Zein's call to establish an international environmental emergency fund aims to secure the necessary funding for environmental recovery after wars. The focus is on the importance of translating international commitments into practical mechanisms that ensure the protection of ecosystems and the restoration of natural resources. Al-Zein reviewed the damages inflicted on Lebanon’s environmental sector due to ongoing conflicts, particularly targeting forests and protected natural areas in the south, and the impact of this on biodiversity, food security, and public health. She proposed that environmental recovery should be made a top priority that cannot be postponed, emphasizing the importance of international community support and investing in effective funding mechanisms. She also underscored the necessity of rejecting the use of the environment in armed conflicts and safeguarding nature from destruction to ensure sustainable recovery and environmental security.
