Microsoft ends OpenAI integration in desktop apps

Microsoft is shifting towards adopting internally developed artificial intelligence models instead of relying on OpenAI models, aiming to reduce costs and enhance performance. The company has launched models MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-preview, and is currently using these models in more than half of its products, with plans to expand their use to include image and audio generation. This change is seen as a response to strengthen its technological independence and cut down the infrastructure expenses associated with OpenAI models, achieving cost savings of over 85% on PowerPoint models while delivering performance comparable to GPT-5.6 within Microsoft 365 applications. Additionally, Microsoft is working on building an integrated AI ecosystem based on its own technologies, gradually decreasing its reliance on OpenAI as a primary provider.
