Google announced changes in its leadership of artificial intelligence operations. Demis Hassabis is stepping down from his role as CEO of Google DeepMind to become its Chairman and Chief Scientist. Meanwhile, Kyro Kafokjo will be responsible for developing AI models. Additionally, Jeff Dean, the former Chief Scientist, has left the company to establish a new startup called Discovery Loop, which focuses on automating scientific research using AI, in collaboration with a number of top researchers. These changes come amid challenges Google faces in staying competitive in the development of generative AI models, with delays in releasing a new rival model to competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. This situation is partly attributed to losses of key talent and technical expertise, despite the company's over a decade of investment in AI research and infrastructure. The announcement also led to a 4% drop in the stock market and the company facing significant regulatory issues, including a €4.1 billion fine from the European Union.
