Plastic pollution annual cost in Tunisia

A report issued by Greenpeace Middle East and North Africa has revealed that plastic pollution in Tunisia costs the country between $170 million and $560 million annually (equivalent to approximately 502.5 million to 1,655.1 million Tunisian dinars). The report anticipates that the bill for inaction in addressing this pollution could reach between $3 billion and $10 billion by 2040 (around 8.8 to 29.5 billion dinars). A study conducted on nine beaches showed that 77% of the collected debris was plastic, and that 98.2% of the waste originated from Tunisia, despite the country's reliance on imported polymers. The report recommends tightening national legislation, especially producer responsibility, reducing the use of single-use plastics, and supporting an international treaty to limit unnecessary plastic, in order to reduce ongoing economic and environmental pollution costs.
