Kairouan Farmers Union Reports 4% Olive Growth
The Kairouan Governorate is preparing to begin the olive harvest season on October 26th, with expectations of producing approximately 275,000 tons of olives, providing around 57,000 tons of olive oil—an increase of 4% compared to the previous season. Despite a national decline, the region has maintained its production levels, owning 13 million olive trees across an area of nearly 200,000 hectares, with Bouhajjla leading in production at 92,000 tons. Officials have urged farmers to monitor their seedlings and disinfect tools to prevent the spread of diseases such as olive quick decline syndrome, emphasizing the importance of maintaining fruit quality during harvesting and transportation. As for prices, they are currently undefined and are influenced by the global supply and demand balance. There is also a need to boost the export of packaged oil and to diversify markets to enhance the added value of the product.
