France prepares for protests with expanded curfew and military deployment

The French authorities have imposed a curfew in the cities of Paris, Marseille, Lille, Lyon, and Nice, including individuals under 18, in an effort to curb the acts of rioting and violence associated with the "Yellow Vest" protests that began on November 17, 2018, in protest against the high cost of living and President Emmanuel Macron's policies. The protests escalated after recent tensions increased. Demonstrations continued with the presence of military forces to strengthen the police forces, especially on the planned protest day Saturday, when officials announced the deployment of special forces to ease the burden on police. The protests have led to the arrest of approximately 2,500 people since the beginning of this week, with over 800 facing trial. Paris returned to calm after a night marked by some acts of rioting and vandalism, while authorities maintained security measures to prevent further escalation.
