A medical team in the Department of Ophthalmology and Oculoplastic Surgery at Ibn Eljazzar University Hospital in Kairouan successfully performed the first corneal transplant surgery in the region on a 52-year-old patient who was suffering from severe bacterial keratitis resulting in a large corneal perforation. The procedure was carried out during the acute inflammatory phase to protect the eye and reduce the risk of damage, and it was entirely successful. The operation was coordinated with the National Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation, as well as the ophthalmology departments in Kairouan and Nabeul, enhancing the region's healthcare capabilities to perform precise emergency procedures and bringing specialized medical services closer to the citizens.
