New Syrian People's Assembly Conducts Session Without Chants

For the first time in its history, the Syrian People's Assembly witnessed the end of the president's speech without any populist chants or applause. The members collectively took the constitutional oath before President Bashar al-Assad, who called on them to make the parliament a model of responsibility and competence. Abdul Hamid Al-Awaq was also elected as the Speaker of the Assembly with a majority of 99 votes. He is one of the most prominent former legal experts in the opposition.
