French race shaken by allegation over Russian network

French authorities have confirmed that a Russian disinformation campaign targeted the French presidential candidate Gabriel Attal through fake posts on the X platform containing false claims about him, such as that he has Parkinson's disease or that he supports more lenient policies towards tenants. The campaign, linked to the pro-Russian "Matryoshka" network, was condemned by the French "Vigenom" agency, which focused on damaging the candidate's reputation and possibly aiming at him because of his support for Ukraine since Russia's invasion in 2022. Authorities also discovered that the campaigns, which targeted other politicians as well, were carried out by networks connected to Russian intelligence, involving limited operations and achieving some goals through the dissemination of fake content on social media.
