US Cuts Aid to Namibia's AIDS Program

The United States has announced a phased reduction in its financial support for HIV/AIDS programs in Namibia, with plans to allocate $45 million for the fiscal year 2027. After that, Namibia is expected to fund its own programs and only engage in technical cooperation. This shift comes after Namibia rejected proposals related to the exchange of health data and biological samples with Washington, citing concerns about privacy and legal sovereignty. Over the past years, the U.S. has contributed more than $1.1 billion since 2003 to Namibia’s efforts to combat AIDS. However, this anticipated withdrawal follows the adoption of the Trump administration’s "America First" policy on foreign aid. Washington also signed separate agreements with around 30 African countries aimed at reducing dependency on donors and increasing domestic financing.
