First Egyptian Sindbis virus case in Germany

A 60-year-old man in Germany has been confirmed to be infected with the Sindbis virus, marking the first case within the country. The infection was detected in September following testing for chikungunya virus in an area where the mosquito vector is present. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and circulates among birds; it is not directly transmitted from person to person. Most infections are asymptomatic or cause mild symptoms such as fever, rash, and joint pain. There is no specific treatment for the virus; care is primarily supportive, focusing on symptom management. Physicians should consider Sindbis virus infection when these symptoms appear during mosquito season, especially if tests for other similar illnesses like dengue fever return negative. The virus was first identified in Egypt in 1952, with human cases recorded in Uganda, South Africa, and Australia during the 1960s and 1970s. The current case is not considered serious; the patient recovered without symptoms. However, experience suggests that such infections are rare and may often go undetected.
