Beijing Tennis: Ribakina Out Early
The world No. 1 seed at the Beijing tennis tournament, Elena Rybakina, lost her title early after being defeated in the second round by Armenian Elina Sharyeva, ranked 118th, with scores of 3-6, 4-6, and 3-6, after a match that lasted two hours and 11 minutes. Rybakina started strongly and won the first set, but her double faults provided an opportunity for her opponent. Sharyeva managed to turn the match around in the third set by holding her serve. This loss is a shocking surprise for the Beijing tournament, especially given Rybakina’s performance since becoming the top-ranked player after winning the United States Open. She is expected to face Sharyeva in the next round against British player Sonay Karthal.
