Libya Government Workforce Pressures

The Libyan Audit Bureau issued a report warning of the rapid increase in public sector expenditures, especially concerning salaries, with annual amounts rising by more than 39.9 billion Libyan dinars over the past five years, reflecting a growth rate of 193.3%. The number of government employees has also increased to approximately 2.26 million, representing more than 85% of the country’s total workforce and exceeding global standards. The bureau called for the establishment of a unified and fair salary scale that considers the nature of work and helps curb arbitrary expansion, in order to ensure financial stability. This comes amid protests and sector-specific strikes in education and health, as workers demand better financial conditions and improved services.
