US developing lunar nuclear reactor
The United States plans to build an independent nuclear reactor on the surface of the Moon near the South Pole, aiming to support a permanent presence and explore resources such as frozen water, as part of a space race with Russia and China. The "Lunar Reactor 1" project seeks to produce 20 kilowatts of power, enough to power several homes, and operate for five years without intervention, initially relying on solar energy and radioactive isotope power systems. Despite advancing plans, scientists warn of the risks associated with bringing nuclear reactors to the Moon, such as potential malfunctions or the spread of radioactive materials, especially given the history of previous launch accidents. The project also faces challenges in securing the necessary nuclear fuel.
