Tunis deploys police to fight impunity

The Tunisian authorities have decided to deploy plainclothes traffic police officers to monitor violations on the roads during peak hours, with the aim of deterring drivers and reducing chaos. This measure comes at a time when Tunisia is experiencing an 11.78% increase in deadly traffic accidents since the beginning of the year through October. This temporary action, which began a week ago in Greater Tunis, is awaiting the widespread implementation of video surveillance to decrease negative phenomena such as driving in the opposite direction, while focusing on reducing violations and speeding up the enforcement of the law. Reactions have been mixed: some view it as a superficial measure reliant on punishment, while others express concerns about potential abuse or bribery. Nonetheless, many agree that video monitoring will help organize traffic behavior more effectively.
