The Syrian Ministry of Interior has detained a leader of the Islamic State organization named Khaled Raaed Bourouini, aka "Abu Hassan Dushka," as part of security operations in Rural Damascus. Bourouini is accused of being responsible for the bombing of the Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in the Wadi Al-Thahab neighborhood of Homs in December 2025, which resulted in the deaths of eight people, as well as planning other sectarian attacks. Although authorities attributed the attack to the organization, the "Shura Guardians of the Sunnah" claimed responsibility, reflecting ongoing organizational activity in the region. This comes amid a continued escalation of ISIS cell activity after its battlefield defeat in Syria in 2019, with still-active cells operating in the country and claiming attacks targeting security forces.
