The Libyan House of Representatives, based in the eastern part of the country, elected Abdel Nabi as its new head after approximately 12 years of Ghaithaa Saleh holding the position. This move marks the culmination of a change in the working systems that had been in place since 2014. The change came after the adoption of a new rule limiting the terms of the presidency of the Council and its deputies to one year, amid members' dissatisfaction with previous decisions made without their consultation. Abdel Nabi is a member of the Saleh tribe and is currently serving as the Vice President of the Council. He is also known for leading the Libyan-Turkish Friendship Committee. Libya has been experiencing political division since 2014, with one government in Tripoli and another in Benghazi. Ghaithaa Saleh is considered a central figure in the Libyan conflict. However, his influence has weakened recently amid a power struggle within the eastern region involving members of his own family and General Haftar, who is seeking to control decision-making and pursue political and economic steps to strengthen his authority.
