EU's Expansion Faces Ukraine Test

The articles address the proposals put forward by the European Commission regarding the mechanism for expanding the European Union amid Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, and Montenegro's aspirations to join. The proposals include safeguards to prevent new members from disrupting decisions or exhausting resources, such as eliminating the veto rights in key areas and restricting access to certain subsidies. The idea of establishing a "partner membership" as a transitional stage is also discussed, but it has been rejected by many countries, including Ukraine, which prefers full membership. EU leaders are expected to debate these proposals at the summit next week, aiming to expand the bloc with guarantees that strengthen trust and reduce the risks associated with including new members—especially in light of the current challenges posed by the Russia-Ukraine war.
