Spain tackles housing crisis with 21 urgent actions
The Spanish government approved 21 urgent measures to address the housing crisis following escalating protests and acts of violence in Barcelona, which came in response to the eviction of an elderly woman in Madrid. The measures include easing the rental and purchase of homes, extending eviction protections for vulnerable individuals, regulating room rentals, imposing a tax on seasonal rentals, and banning the purchase of properties for speculative purposes. The government also announced the creation of a 10 billion euro fund to provide loans for first-time homebuyers and to support construction. These measures will require approval from a temporary legislative body. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for support from the opposition, stating that these steps aim for a swift resolution to the crisis and to prevent unjust evictions.
