The Israeli authorities have closed the British consulate in East Jerusalem, following orders from the Israeli government, which demanded its closure within 30 days due to Britain's opposition to the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The consulate staff removed signs and symbols bearing its name, while the British flag continues to be flown above the building. Israel insists on closing it, despite Britain's efforts to keep it operational, including sending a British security adviser for undisclosed talks. This is part of a diplomatic dispute that could extend to the possible expulsion of Israeli diplomats from Britain, with relations between the two sides escalating. The situation comes amid fears of new British sanctions against Israeli financial institutions linked to settlement expansion, particularly the "E-1" project connecting Jerusalem with Ma'ale Adumim, which threatens to divide East Jerusalem from the West Bank.
