International Criminal Court overview

The International Criminal Court was established in 2002 to prosecute those involved in war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and acts of aggression, especially when member states are unable to do so themselves. The court's jurisdiction covers cases from various regions such as Ukraine, Palestine, Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and it issues arrest warrants for high-profile suspects like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and leaders of the Taliban movement. Despite the support of many countries, nations like the United States, Russia, and Israel oppose the court, citing concerns that it could be used for political purposes. Washington has also imposed sanctions on officials associated with the court. To date, the court has issued 15 convictions, most of them targeting leaders of African militias, with sentences including life imprisonment.
