Scientists uncover secret of 194-year-old turtle

Jonathan, the giant Aldabra tortoise aged 194 years, represents the oldest known wild animal in the world. Studies indicate that its longevity is due to a combination of genetic traits and the ability to maintain youthful functioning of cellular systems, particularly regarding DNA repair, telomere regulation, and mitochondrial function. It has been found to possess genes associated with tumor suppression and cancer cells, along with extra copies of a gene that targets aging and cancerous cells. Genetic sequencing and epigenomic analysis revealed that some aging mechanisms may be shared across species, with environmental factors such as a balanced diet and medical care contributing to its extended lifespan. Scientists continue to study this tortoise to uncover the secrets of longevity.
