Turkey restricts social media for under 15s
A new regulation has been published in the Turkish Official Gazette, prohibiting social media platforms from providing services to children under the age of 15. The regulation mandates age verification through the e-Government portal "E-Devlet." It requires platforms to implement strict privacy settings, make children's accounts private, ban live streaming and targeted advertisements directed at them, restrict messaging on accounts followed by children, and hide followers and following lists. Additionally, the regulation includes parental control tools that allow parents to manage their children's use of the platforms. It is scheduled to take effect on November 1, 2023, with verification processes concluding in March 2024, leading to the closure of accounts identified as belonging to individuals under the age of 15.
