Niger confronts major oil spill
Niger experienced a serious environmental incident resulting from a massive spill of oil and gas in an isolated desert area in the eastern part of the country, specifically at the "Gouméri W8" well. The incident occurred on September 25th and caused large quantities of oil and gas to spray into the air at heights exceeding 10 meters, creating an oil slick stretching hundreds of meters across the ground. The situation is still partially under control, and the full causes of the incident have not yet been determined. Fraud or terrorist motives have been ruled out, and investigators are working with the help of Algerian experts. This disaster is considered one of the largest environmental crises Niger has faced since beginning its oil production in 2011.
