Healthcare Gaps in Postpartum Care

The article discusses the stories of women suffering from postpartum psychosis and highlights the failures within the medical system in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders after childbirth. It sheds light on personal experiences, such as that of Dr. Esty Rohlhaus, who experienced hallucinations and believed she was under conspiracy, followed by attempts to obtain appropriate mental health care. The piece emphasizes that approximately 20% of women experience mood or anxiety disorders during the perinatal period, yet 75-80% of them do not receive adequate diagnosis or treatment due to a lack of specialized facilities and limited awareness. The situation underscores an urgent need to improve access to specialized treatments and to establish treatment centers that offer support for mothers and their children, alongside the necessity for the healthcare system to recognize these disorders and ensure full health insurance coverage.
