Trump grants sanctions exemption before enforcement
Days before the new sanctions law came into effect, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a decision to grant exemptions from the related sanctions and customs duties concerning Russia. This move disregarded the threatened imposition of tariffs of up to 100% on all goods originating from the five largest countries importing Russian oil and gas. This development occurs amid a gradual easing of tensions between the United States and Russia, with Trump showing signs of rapprochement with Moscow and openly criticizing Ukraine, including hints at the need to change Kyiv's leadership. Prior to the law's enactment, there was acknowledgment of the goals to limit evasion of Russian sanctions. However, Trump emphasized that the exemptions serve American national interests and are intended to promote cooperation with Russia. It is noteworthy that the law aims to impose tariffs on countries that knowingly purchase Russian oil and gas or assist Russia in evading sanctions.
