Hormuz Crisis and Iraq-Syria Ties
The Strait of Hormuz crisis has prompted Iraq and Syria to strengthen their economic cooperation, as both countries aim to establish free trade zones at border crossings and turn them into commercial and service hubs. These steps are part of their efforts to mitigate the impact of the crisis on supplies and trade, amid questions about the sustainability of this cooperation given regional instability and limited trust between the two governments. The recent agreements are leading to the development of border infrastructure and increased collaboration in the oil, manufacturing, and logistics sectors, with expectations that they will help strengthen the economic relationship between Iraq and Syria.
