Indonesia Continues Orangutan Rescue Efforts

Indonesia is dealing with widespread wildfires that have caused the spread of toxic smoke, leading to school closures and increased respiratory problems among humans and animals. Additionally, these fires have impacted air travel, with approximately 2,400 flights canceled since mid-August. As part of rescue efforts, wildlife protection teams have managed to rescue 96 orangutans, most of them from West Kalimantan province, through evacuation operations that include tranquilization and health examinations before rehabilitation. The outbreak of the fires is attributed to a strong El Niño phenomenon, which reduces rainfall and makes it more difficult to control the flames.
