Beijing's Population Ages Rapidly
By 2035, Beijing is expected to become a super-aged city, with the population aged 60 and above accounting for one-third of the total population, with about 5.29 million people in this age group at the end of last year. The Chinese government faces an estimated cost of up to 180 billion yuan (approximately $26.92 billion) to boost birth rates and support the elderly, including increasing basic pensions. This aging trend poses significant challenges to the economy and social infrastructure, especially given declining population rates and the number of children, impacting economic growth and consumption.
