Eisenkott Challenges Ashkenazi Hold and Netanyahu

The article highlights the political rise of former Israeli Army Chief Gadi Eizenkot, who is now running alongside his new party, "Yachar," in the upcoming legislative elections scheduled for October 2026. It focuses on his Moroccan and Eastern origins and how the far-right coalition has targeted him through campaigns of racist incitement, emphasizing his ethnic background to undermine him politically and reduce support from conservative circles. Polls show Eizenkot's popularity doubling, surpassing Netanyahu, especially among Eastern voters. The electoral contest reflects the deep social divisions and the Zionist identity split between Ashkenazim and Mizrahim, raising concerns about the potential destruction of the traditional elites who founded Israel with Western roots. At the same time, Eizenkot threatens to alter the conventional political landscape and increase Eastern representation in leadership.
