Official Arabic Use Sparks Mauritania Debate

The Minister of Culture in Mauritania issued a decision requiring officials in the sector to use the Arabic language in all correspondence and documents addressed to his office, with the aim of strengthening the presence of Arabic in administration and reaffirming it as an official language according to the constitution. This decision comes within the context of a long-standing debate over language and identity in the country, where French is still widely used in administration and education, despite Article 6 of the constitution stipulating that Arabic is the official language. Civil society initiatives welcomed the move, considering it a way to enhance compliance with the constitution and bring administrative services closer to citizens. However, some activists oppose the choice of a minister who only speaks Arabic, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balance among the official languages and other national languages.
