Wild dogs trek 4000 km for mate

The story highlights the journey of three African wild dogs, all males, in Zambia. They traveled over 4,125 kilometers across nine months in search of females for mating and to establish new packs. The journey faced significant challenges such as crossing crocodile-infested rivers, traversing areas populated by lions, and the dangers posed by human hunting and wire traps, which resulted in the death of one female. The study reveals that these animals possess an astonishing ability to communicate and travel vast distances. It underscores the importance of their social bonds in protecting them from extinction, even though threats like poaching hinder their survival. The narrative also emphasizes the need for economic alternatives to combat the trap problem that endangers the lives of these wild dogs.
