Cameroonian President Paul Biya (93 years old) has returned to the country from Switzerland amid widespread criticism on social media due to his repeated absences from the nation. Biya has been ruling the Republic of Cameroon since 1982 and is currently in his eighth presidential term, approaching the age of ninety. This has raised political and economic concerns due to his continuous absence from domestic affairs and the deteriorating state of the country, marked by rising unemployment rates and separatist conflicts. The government defended his absence, affirming his ability to manage the country’s affairs remotely despite the vacancy of the Vice President position, which has not yet been filled. This situation deepens political and economic risks and increases the dangers surrounding the transfer of power in a country that often experiences presidential absences and has a limited political history.
