A trial is underway for defendants accused of desecrating the national flag at a hotel in Algiers. The two individuals were previously sentenced to seven years in prison and ordered to pay 20 million Algerian dinars in compensation in a case that sparked public outrage after a video circulated showing one of them stepping on the flag during a party. The trial has been postponed to August 12th after an appeal of the verdict, as the prosecution is demanding a 10-year prison sentence. The defendants face intentional desecration charges under Algerian criminal law.
