Spain urges emergency declaration over migration pressures

The Spanish city of Ceuta faced significant pressure due to an unprecedented wave of illegal migration flows across the coasts opposite Morocco, with approximately two thousand migrants reaching the city by swimming over the past two weeks— the largest surge since the May 2021 crisis. This has caused shelters to exceed their capacity, with a facility designed for 512 people hosting over 727. In response, authorities set up temporary camps, dispatched additional resources to accommodate around 500 minors, and faced increasing security, humanitarian, and administrative pressures. The local government has even called for declaring a state of emergency to deal with the crisis.
