The Head of Emergency Services at the University Hospital of November 1 in Oran revealed that the hospital receives between 10 and 15 cases of food poisoning daily since the start of summer. He explained that the causes of poisoning include consuming contaminated foods and water containing bacteria, viruses, or parasites, as well as toxins released by certain germs. These contaminants cause gastritis and enteritis, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting, with the potential for complications among sensitive groups. He emphasized that among the main reasons for the spread of summer poisoning are the poor preservation of seasonal fruits, their exposure to sunlight, the lack of proper personal hygiene practices—especially handwashing—and purchasing food from unreliable sources, particularly street vendors. He called for adherence to preventive measures such as thoroughly washing hands and fruits, buying food from trusted sources, following proper refrigeration and cooking practices, and discarding suspicious foods to reduce these cases and protect public health.
