Algeria Leads Peace Council on Education in Crisis
A public session of the African Union Peace and Security Council, chaired by Algeria, discussed the topic "Education in Armed Conflicts" in August, aiming to protect children's right to education during conflicts that have worsened across the African continent. The session confirmed that millions of children are deprived of education due to conflicts and displacement, which threaten peace stability and sustainable development. It emphasized the importance of protecting schools and teachers, and allocated funding of $8.8 million to support education in affected areas. Additionally, it highlighted the need to strengthen monitoring and implementation mechanisms to ensure the continuation of education amidst crises. Officials reaffirmed the necessity of African and international solidarity to promote children's rights in a safe and sustainable educational environment, and to achieve peace and stability across the continent.
