Indian ruler barred from departing Britain
Duleep Singh, the exiled Sikh Maharaja, was denied access to return to India after British annexation of his empire and settled in Britain, where he bought Elveden Hall. His life and family history have been extensively studied and collected by Peter Bance, who has amassed over 2,000 artifacts, some displayed at Kensington Palace. The collection includes items from Singh's family and highlights their significant but often overlooked influence in Britain.
