Reasons Behind Japan’s Large Earthquakes
A recent magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan, causing fatalities, injuries, and infrastructure damage, including a partially collapsed shopping mall. Despite Japan’s extensive earthquake preparedness and resilient infrastructure, such disasters continue to result in casualties and property destruction. The government warns of a high likelihood of a future “megathrust” earthquake along the Nankai Trough within 30 years, though scientific predictions remain debated.
