El Niño may threaten California fisheries
Scientists warn that a likely 'super' El Niño, with an 81% chance, could trigger major disruptions to West Coast marine fisheries, similar to or worse than the 2015-16 climate event. Rising ocean temperatures are causing rapid shifts in marine species, leading to declines in key fisheries such as Dungeness crab, salmon, and squid, which can result in seasonal closures and economic losses for fishermen. The changing conditions also threaten aquaculture and increase uncertainty for future fishing seasons.
